Great Time of Year
1/23/08
If you’re a fan of youth wrestling, especially IKWF wrestling fan, you have to love this time of year. It seems like after the holidays, things start rocking in Illinois. The Midwest Classic just finished. Tulsa National is over. Jon Davis IKWF Kids Open was completed and the world famous ilwrestling.com midseason rankings are done. Let’s don’t forget we crowned two athletes for ilwrestling.com’s Midseason Triple Crown winners too. AND! not to mention the IKWF Senior Duals are coming up in just days. Yes, it’s a great time of year.
Iowa Bounty Hunters are Classic…
The Iowa Bounty Hunters came from the great wrestling state of Iowa to participate in this year’s Midwest Classic. The Iowa boys ran away with the team race this year. They finished with 314 points way ahead of second place Team CIA (Indiana) who had 192.5 points. Bounty Hunters were lead by three champions (Kory Clark-89lbs, Brandon Sorenson-95lbs and Ethan Lara-147lbs). Gomez WA was the top team from Illinois finishing in third place with 168 points. Tinley Park does a nice job yet again as tournament host. Next year will be even better.
Jon Davis Kids Open…
The name may have changed slightly but, the tournament was the same. The major fund raiser for the federation was a huge success this year. As always, the tournament seems to be a preview of Rockford. In honor of long time South Sectional Director, Jon Davis (1942-2007), the IKWF Kids Open is now a memorial tournament. This is very classy move by the board and federation. Mr. Davis’ name should live on for a long, long time.
Tulsa, Tulsa, Tulsa…
The results don’t lie. Illinois looks as if it had a great tournament. Tournament results can be found at: www.worldofwrestling-roller.com
“Rankings” mean…?
Not a thing when it comes right down to it. Ilwrestling.com ranks kids who compete at certain tournaments. Tough kids from all over the state will make in impact in Rockford and will never be “ranked” by ilwrestling. Some free advice, if you take IKWF rankings to serious, you’d better get your priorities straight. On the liter side, the rankings are fun for debate. They give fans a list of wrestlers to watch out for. They indicate who wrestles in the top tournaments and have done well. Final rankings will be set Saturday night after the IKWF state finals.
Midseason Triple Crown…(2)
Congrats to out to Jonathan Marmolejo (GWA) and Gage Harrah (CLW) for winning the Little Celtic Elite, Midwest Classic and the Jon Davis Kids Open Elite division. This is a great accomplishment by these two young warriors.
Senior Duals, still my favorite…
IKWF state series kicks off with the Senior Duals this weekend. Twelve clubs from all parts of the state will battle it out at Willowbrook High School, Villa Park to see who has the best dual team in the state. This is a tough year to predict. Lots of parity at the duals this year. Any one of three, maybe four, teams could win it.
Predictions:
Round #1
Minooka Little Indians over Granite City Jr. Warriors
Force over Richmond WC
Central Elite Rebels over Villa/Lombard
Edwardsville WC over Martinez Fox Valley Elite
I think MFVE has too many FFTs to over come against Edwardsville. The Minooka -Granite City match up will be a good indicator of how deep with talent the South Section has
Round #2
Gomez WA over Minooka
Bulls over Force
Crystal Lake Wizards over CER
Vittum Catz over EDW
The best dual of the day could be the Bulls and Force WC.
Round #3
Semis
Bulls over Gomez
Vittum over Crystal Lake
Not an easy round to call. Wow. The Bulls have to battle with another heavy hitter to make the finals. This dual could go either way, but I give the edge to Bulls.
Round #4
Finals- Vittum over the Bulls. If this isn’t a tight dual I will be very surprised. Look for the dual to be decided by the upper weights. This will be worth the price to get in.
3rd- Gomez over Crystal Lake. I wouldn’t be shocked if either one of these two clubs are in the finals.
Is it to early to think about freestyle/greco…?
It’s never to early to be thinking freestyle and/or greco-roman wrestling. Schoolboy duals will be here before we know it. We (Morris) are hosting the Land of Lincoln FS duals again this year. Training facilities? Have one yet? Get into one now. It will be here before we know it…

Ilwrestling Gets Ready for New Season
Bloggers, calendar new features to web site/forum
9/26/07
I started the web site and message board a few years ago to try and recognize the youth wrestlers and coaches in Illinois. Little did I know what I was getting myself into. Hours and hours of time, cash out of pocket, headaches, and last but not least, lots of enjoyment. Like all projects it started out small but then got bigger and I needed help. My computer wiz, and the brains of this operation, Kip(Collinsville WC) was nice enough to volunteer to take on all web site technical issues. Kip also helps me moderate the ilwrestling message board too. Kip was the one who bailed me out of the mess I had with the old forum. If you remember, the spam/bot problem was out of control and way beyond my abilities to fix. The message board is his baby and I thank him for that. He's done a wonderful job as moderator and programmer.
Even with Kip's help the web site is not where I'd like to see it. From an operations stand point the web site is great but I want to improve on the recognition / promotion part. I can only cover so much youth wrestling. My two older boys are well into varsity wrestling and my little guy is a Bantam still. I'm just not "out there"(well, some say I'm way out there but that's another story) in the mix with the kids like I once was. So what we came up with is a section on the web site that will allow people from across the state to write a "blog" for their section. Eight people, one from each section of the state. This will give everyone a chance to read about kids, tournaments, camps, etc. etc. etc. from all over the state. Together we can give these kids and coaches the credit they deserve. Let's face it, wrestling is not the most popular sport out there. I've been saying it for years. The Internet is the best way to cover wrestling. The sport just doesn't get much TV or newspaper coverage, especially at the youth level. If we want the kids and coaches recognized and if we want the sport promoted, WE have to do it. The Internet and this web site are the one of the vehicles to do this. Right now I have the South, Central and West Chicago sections filled for our bloggers. That leaves the West, North, South Chicago, Central Chicago, and North Chicago. If you are interested, please email me.
A new feature on the message board will be a calendar. The calendar will be for registered users only. It will be for informational purposes only. Post tournament information, camps, and any information that has to do with wrestling. The calendar is not the forum. Discussion will not be allowed. Moderating the forum is enough work as it is. We don't need two of them. Look for this new feature in the very near future.
National tournaments.
7/19/07
This topic comes up every now and again. The latest Border Wars "National" around Christmas time had me thinking.
So here it goes...
In my opinion the whole "National" tournament theme has gotten old. Seems like everyone wants to host a "National." Is there a month on the calendar you can't go to a "National" tournament? With a 100 different "Nationals" out there, how does anyone decide on which one(s) to go too? Even Roller events have expanded from two "Nationals" and one "World Championship"(Kids World Champion... WTH is that?) The USAW Dominator(?) series is out there too.
What do parents consider when going to a "National?" Money? Competition? Distance to travel?
I never felt my guy(s) had to wrestle in every "national" out there. My rule of thumb was:
#1. You had better be very competitive in your own state before you go looking to beat out of state kids. Call it the toughest kids on the block logic. If you can't whoop everyone on your own block, ain't no reason to go across town looking for a fight
#2. The tournament had better be worth the time and money FOR ME first. This sport can get expensive, really expensive at times. Like most people, I'm not made of money and time off work can sometimes be tough.
Because of these two things, If I'm traveling to spend large amounts of cash, it had better be worth it.
Now "being worth it" is very relative. Competition is, was and will be the number one requirement for me. This pretty much stands true for any event, but especially at a "National" event. Distance was always number two. At one time, I'd drive a long distance if I thought it was going to be a great event. Time off work was number three. Sometimes you just don't have the time to make the event. This is critical when picking a "National."
My short list of "Nationals" that are worth the time and money:
#1) Jack Roller's Tulsa National- Never been but I can read results. The competition is the best.
#2) USAW's Folkstyle National-Went when it was in Topeka, KS and in Cedar Rapids, IA. Competition is outstanding. The Iowa location makes this tournament a must for any and all Illinois wrestlers.
#3) Jack Roller's Cliff Keen Kick Off Classic-Smaller Brackets then the Tulsa National but, still a very tough kids tournament.
#4) AAU Ohio Tournament of Champions-Never been but, have heard this is one of the best kid tournaments in the nation. Some even say better then Tulsa.. Excellent chance to wrestle against the OH, PA and East coast kids.
#5) USAW's Freestyle and Greco-Roman National-Small brackets compared to every folkstyle national, but competition is brutal. If your guy is still into wrestling at this time of year, the trip to Greenbay, WI is a must. This may be a small tournament but, the kids are all very dedicated.
Special mention tournaments:
-USAW's Schoolboy Dulas are in a category by itself. Bar-none the toughest age and weight tournament you will ever attend. But, it's a dual format and not everybody can go, so I leave it off this list.
-Liberty National looks to be a great tournament. One of the "Nationals" that is not very old, but has become one of the favorites around the country(for good reason I hear).
-Midwest Classic... Our Midwest Classic, as in Tinley Park's Midwest Classic. This is one great tournament. Throw out the age divisions and make scratch weight the day of the tournament. Now that's old-school. Take all of Illinois' best, add some of Indiana's, and Wisconsin's best and you have one tough tournament.
I listed five great "Nationals". What I consider "top tier" national events. In my past I don't think my family ever attended more then two or three of them in a single year. I never thought is was necessary to do more then that. Plus I don't think I could have taken the time off work if I wanted too.

2006 Schoolboy Freestyle National Duals
6/16/06
Here we go a gain...
Freestyle was scheduled to start Friday night after the greco finals. So between tournaments we're waiting for our pool assignment. Last year Team Illinois didn't place top eight so we will get a blind draw this year for freestyle. And of course we get pooled with PA's #1 again for the second straight year. Which really didn't bother me. Believing we had a very tough team this year, I wanted to see how we would do against what I considered the best team. Kansas placed 8th last year so they were locked in our pool too. Having Kansas was no problem. They just didn't bring the same team like last year, but Minnesota's #1 was in with us and they did bring a good greco and freestyle team this year.
The greco to freestyle transition...
The consolation finals finished around 4-5pm. We started the freestyle dual tournament at 7:30pm. This is Team Illinois' ninth dual in two days and we faced a tough Minnesota team. The boys had to get into freestyle mode fast. I liked our chances against Minnesota's#1. As good as they were in greco, I knew we could hang with them in freestyle, if not beat them. It was a very competitive dual. Team Illinois was up until we hit the upper weights. The Minnesota kids just had more experience at those weight classes and pulled off a come from behind victory on us. Over all, I don't think the Illinois kids wrestled their best. Maybe a little tired, and a little flat and the greco to freestyle transition had some thing to do with it.
It's go time...
Team Illinois came back Saturday morning to wrestle PA's#1. They beat us pretty bad in greco, but freestyle was a different story. After wrestling flat against Minnesota the night before, the guys came out ready to wrestle. We lost the first four matches to start the dual(competitive matches though) before Cooper pinned his kid at 90lbs. That pin helped us get back into the dual. Brewster lost a close one to Megaluadis(2-0,2-1) but Antonio Juarez picked up a victory at 100lbs. The dual was starting to get away from us until the 145lbs. match. That's when our "flying aces", as Mr. Lunn nicked named them, started to wrestle. Jahwon Akui(145) got a win, Washington(165) won, Trevino(185) had a HUGE pin and Allgretti(205) got a big win for us. Next thing you know, it's only 39-33 Pennsylvania. The jokes and smiles had left the Pennsylvania coach's corner and was replaced with concern. PA went on to win the last two matches by pin, but we show once again we could freestyle with anyone.
Consolation Champs... AGAIN!
Unlike last year's team, when this Team Illinois was sent into the consolation bracket, because of a terrible draw I might add, they wanted to win it. They did just that. Looking at the bracket, there was some good competition there. We beat Minnesota's#2 handily. Had a closer dual with Michigan than we should have. We gave up way to many pins only to have Ross Ferraro(215) pin his kid to seal the dual. Then came Indiana Gold... By now Team Illinois had wrestled fifteen duals, eight greco and seven freestyle. I heard they were beaten and battered, but this was Indiana. The kids didn't need much motivation and it showed with a lop sided victory,49-28, that included three pins to Indiana's zero. The Illinoiz boyz really stepped it up. One of the big matches had to be at 145lbs(Akui-IL/Vlahos-IN). Akui gets the late 3rd period pin to win a tough, tough match between two of the top 145s in the tournament.
I enjoyed my two years...
I can't say enough about these Schoolboy Freestyle/Greco National Duals. There is no tougher competition in the country. Mark Mestemacher does a great job. The coaching staff this year with Eric Wetzel and Keith Healey was terrific. The kids improved with every dual we had. The kids were great. Illinois freestyle/greco at the Schoolboy age took a big step this weekend. Illinois has never have came home with two medals form this dual meet. In the greco tournament there's no doubt Team Illinois was a top seven team. If we have better luck with our freestyle pool, Team Illinois is top five or six there too.
I highly recommend this tournament. The 2006 team has now set the bar. Hopefully the next set of Illinois Schoolboy will raise it even higher.

IL-USAW Does It Again, Freestyle State
5/10/06
Back-to-back jacks!!!
The Cubs can’t do it but, IL-USAW can. For two years in a row now Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Urwin, Coach Johnson and their crew(s) ran a great Illinois Freestyle State Tournament. I passed on a few “thank yous” and “this is really great” to some of the folks running the tournament but not everyone. So I want to say “Thank you” to everyone who helped run this tournament. I, and many others, are very grateful. We all look forward to next year.
Rules were made to be broken...
The “new” rules. I’m a big proponent of the phrase, “if it ain’t broken, don’t try and fix it.” FILA may have felt freestyle and greco was broken at some level but it wasn’t broken at the Junior age divisions and lower. Speaking with local wrestling fans/parents and reading national message boards, pretty much everyone has the same opinion of the new rules. That opinion is a negative one at best. Some people like a few things FILA changed, a lot of people dislike the changes and most everyone was more happy with the “old” rules. For me... there’s really not one thing I like about the new rules. I was happy with the old ones. I don’t like the three periods. I don’t like the 6-0 tech. I don’t like the lack of par terre wrestling in freestyle. I like the intension of the step out rule but not the 1pt penalty. I don’t like the tie breaker criteria. If it ain’t broke, don’t try and fix it.
Baby, we’ve come a long way...
Did you see the total number of wrestlers? 610 entries! That’s a big freestyle tournament. Now days, that’s a HUGE freestyle tournament in Illinois. I remember just two years ago, all to well, at Lincoln Way East High School. What was it? 300-350 total wrestlers? Or how about in Rock Island? Fewer than 300? It was just a couple of years ago when IL-USAW was able to run the Freestyle State on Saturday and the Greco State on Sunday. Now it’s a scheduled two day event and freestyle only. I have to believe the overall number of freestylers in Illinois is growing. Overtime has their kids. Top Gun has well over 200 kids(250 I think). Izzy Style Wrestling will do nothing but get bigger and bigger. Illinois Southern Elite, also known as ISE-Man has the Southern wrestlers covered. I hope our state keeps it up.
High five for the “kids” divisions...
Of the 610 entries how many do you think were in the “kids” divisions? I counted just over 200. 200!!! Let me back track a little and say again, I remember just 2, 3 years ago when the entire Freestyle State tournament was 300-350 wrestlers. That was ALL divisions. Now in 2006 the “kids” have over 200 entries? The event flier said the “kids” would compete on two designated mats. Before the tournament I actual questioned if two mats would be enough. It wasn’t. The “kids” needed 4 mats. Would you believe because of the number of kids, IL-USAW is planning what to do in case the numbers continue to grow. I was privy to a conversation with a few gentlemen running the tournament and spoke with a few others about what IL-USAW should do with the “kids”. The ideas ranged from hosting a “Kids” Freestyle/Greco State on a separate weekend/location, to adding two more mats, to making the kids qualify for state. Could you imagine having to qualify for Freestyle State? In any case, the “kids” division is growing and IL-USAW is going to have to do something in the future.
Quality over quantity any day...
Even with record numbers in the kids division not all the brackets were full. At this time of year you don’t need 24 kids in a bracket for competitive wrestling. Give me a bracket with 7 tough kids with vertical bracketing and that’s a good day of wrestling. If you noticed in each age division the number of wrestlers increased. Midgets had a small amount, the Novice had decent numbers and the Schoolboys had over 100 wrestlers. In the Novice and Schoolboy there were some very competitive brackets. One of the greatest things about this freestyle/greco biz is this: It’s one organization. Take the IESA kids, the IKWF Novice kids and the IKWF Senior kids and it forces them to all wrestle each other. And although there might only be 5, 6, 7 or 12 kids in the bracket... at this time of year ALL of those kids are into their wrestling.
Congratulations to all the “kids division” wrestlers, coaches and parents. YOU are making a difference in the international styles in the state of Illinois. When these little guys hit the Cadet level they will be ready and that is a good thing for Illinois wrestling.

USAW Folkstyle Nationals
4/11/06
The Good...
The USAW Folkstyle National is a must for the serious wrestler and even the not so serious wrestler. What a great chance to test ones skills against some of the best wrestlers in the country. I hope over the last three years Illinois youth wrestlers have taken advantage of this top notch national. This is suppose to be the last year in Iowa... The folks who ran it did a fantastic job this year too. I love the numbered bout system you get at these national tournaments... The UNI Dome is a good facility and the twenty mats spread out of the football field is cool. I over heard one little wrestler say, “Wrestling on a football field!?! This is the best of both worlds.” How true... It’s always great to see the Illinois kids flock together and root for one another. Illinois head-to-head match ups did occur but for the most part you get the “us against the rest of the country” feeling at these nationals...
The chance to meet Cael Sanderson was perfect for these young wrestlers. LIVE updates via the inter-net... WOW!!!
The Bad...
As smooth as the morning session went, when the “kids” showed up for the afternoon session they changed some things around. Mat assignments were changed. The bout number system was changed and was a little confusing... I’m not sure they seeded all the brackets. National placers from last year were supposed to be seeded and I don’t think that happened in all the brackets. They did do a pretty good job of separating kids from the same state tho... All in all there wasn’t much “bad” to this tournament. If I had to pick one thing it would be the lack of stalling calls at a national level event. Just another reason why I prefer watching free over folkstyle
The Ugly...
Eating at the IHOP Sunday morning instead of watching wrestling, there’s no more ugly feeling in the world(at least at the very moment)... Driving home Sunday morning instead watching wrestling, there’s no more ugly feeling... Talking to, ahh you get the point... Where were the Twisters? I thought for sure we would see a ton of those little guys out there... No top Iowa kids. Yep the AAU MSND drew the top Iowa and Ohio kids. You throw in the top three kids from Iowa and Ohio into each bracket and this tournament goes from tough to “lights out”... This is a good enough reason to pull this national from the Hawkeye state.
In my book the Folkstyle season is officially over. I know there are some very good folkstyle tournaments out there but, it’s time for a change. That change is freestyle and greco-roman. It’s like a fresh breath of air not only my guys, but for mom and dad too.
What time is it??? Freestyle time!!!

Rockin in Rockford
3/13/06 The double banger...
The Sons Of Thunder followed up their IKWF Dual Team State Championship with an impressive team State Championship in Rockford. All the hard work and time the kids/coaches have put in has truly paid off. They finished with 199pts to Fox Valley and Vittum’s 124.5pts. Recording individual state championships for the Sons were Keith Surber(89lbs), Jake Gregerson(108), and Brandon Wilbourn(122). They were tough... congratulations to them.
Twisters rip it up in the Novice.
Oh boy did they ever. The Harvey Park District Twisters claimed their clubs first Novice division State Championship by out scoring the Little Celtic Wrestling Club 139.5 to 143.5. The Little Celtics were the defending Novice State Champs and were a favorite to win it again, but the Twisters should nothing is given away in the IKWF. The Twisters were lead by three Novice State Champs, Christopher Wright(101lbs), Rodney Johnson(108lbs), and Alvin Foster (166lbs). This red storm IS rising. The IKWF future looks bright red.
Shock treatment therapy... Rockford style.
Who wasn’t shocked when Andy Spangler(FV) was ridden out by Steven Murphy(VIT) for his double overtime win in the semis? Who wasn’t shocked when Matthew Dwyer(HON) pinned Jahwon Akui(GLAD) in the semis? Who wasn’t shocked when Ryan Dix(GOM) head-locked Logan Arliss(BAT) in the 3rd period to win 5-4 in the semis? Who wasn’t shocked when Jake Gregerson(SOT) pinned Chris Dardanes(FEN) in the semis? Who wasn’t shocked when Joey Gosinski(V/L) pinned Blaise Butler(FIT) in the finals? This was one state tournament that just had me shaking my head none stop.
This is what Rockford is all about.
The Cameron Kennedy(WF)-Kevon Powell(HT) semi match was a good match between two of the IKWF’s future stars. Another good match up was the Josh Bennet(SOT)-Drake Chase(RIV) semi final. Bennet gets the 1-0 decision. Ernest Battaglia(FV) really surprised me with an 11-6 win over Chris Williams(BULLS). That 10 year old has a very bright future in the IKWF. Speaking of 10 year olds, Bryce Brill(FV) goes home with the novice 74lbs board and it won’t be his last. The 95lbs finals match between Derek Nagel(VIT) and Steve Congenie(HINS) was a good one. Never count a Cat out of it come state time. I still can’t get over the Dwyer-Akui match. What would the state finals be without a little controversy? The Ambrose(OPP) state finals double overtime victory over Cooper(LCWC) will be up for debate for some time. Pound for pound, is Sterling Hecox not the best wrestler in the IKWF? Even Ray Charles could see that!!!
Platform dancing...
The raised platform for the finals was awesome. That was a really nice touch this year. The wrestlers didn’t disappoint either. The Dix-Cavallaris(FV) final was good. The crowd got what they wanted with an all Martinez Fox Valley Elite 95lbs final between Joey Uccardi and Colton Rasche. Expect to see these to battle in the high school ranks for the next four years. Two of Illinois’ best. How about Matt O’Boyle(TPB) becoming a 2X State Champs by beating Nick Dardanes(FEN) 2-0? WOW! Talk about saving your best for last. That’s two years in a row! Munster(FV-115lbs) is a flat out beast. There is more in the South then just the Sons Of Thunder. I give you Devon Johnson(SAK-138lbs). The 156lbs final between Khari Washington(GLAD) and Mike Parker(RedH) was entertaining.
A year like no other...
I would like to finish by recognizing the Little Celtic’s senior 79lbs 2X State Champion and my little guy Seth. I’m super proud of my Sethers... winning the Little Celtics Elite(for the fourth time), Midwest Classic, Tholl Elite and finishing off the season with a state championship was definitely a year like no other. Congratulations son:)

2006 State Duals
1/31/06
Son of a gun... they did it!
Congratulation to the Sons Of Thunder for winning the 2006 IKWF Dual Team State Championship. In round one they beat the Harlem Cougars 67-26. In round two they did what only a few people in the state thought they could do, they beat Martinez Fox Valley Eilte 42-41. That has to go down as one of the all time great duals in IKWF history. Not only did they deny Martinez Elite's bid to become five time Team Dual State Champions, it was a club out of a section in the state that has only won one title previous. Like last years final with the Little Celtics this dual came down to the final bout between Martinez Elite and the newcomers. Only this time it did not go Martinez's way, the Sons Of Thunder had their ace in the hole by way of Jake Gregerson. Not a bad wrestler going with the dual on the line. Jake was an IKWF State Champ last year and a Tulsa National Champ already this year. Kids like that are usually wearing "Elite" singlets. The Little Celtic Wrestling Club were the next victims. Sons Of Thunder got the match-up victories they needed at 70, 79, 89 and 95 to close the door on the green guys and blasted it wide open for them to win it all 53-39. On an abnormally warm day in January, it was their day in the sun. Is it too early to talk about a repeat???
The state dual experience...
There's none like it. I believe this is the top tournament in the IKWF. If you think the finals in Rockford are intense, you should attend the duals next year in Danville. Every match is huge. It's not just about the elite kids on the club, it's about the entire club working together as a team to earn a state title. The 275lbs first year wrestler is as important as the 84lbs returning state champ with eight years of experience. I saw it with the Scoolboy Freestyle/Greco team and I watched all day long at Bloom Trail HS. Comradery...it's a wonderful thing in youth sports. All these kids, from the Sons Of Thunder to the Villa-Lombard Cougars worked very hard to get to this point. I don't recall seeing any kids giving less then 100% Sunday. You better believe every victory was earned. I realize not all clubs can assemble a dual team and compete at the state duals, but the clubs that can and don't, I believe they are doing their clubs a disservice. After all, when they reach high school it's all about the team and dual meets.
No storybook ending here...
As much as I would have loved to see the Little Celtics win a dual team state title, and my little guy win his final IKWF dual match, it just wasn't meant to be. It definitely wasn't because of a lack of effort by the kids. It wasn't because the coaches didn't prepare. It wasn't because of poor sportsmanship. To steal a baseball phrase, sometimes you just have to "tip your hat" to the other guy and say they were just better than you that day. No more, no less. The green guys everyone loves to hate will be back, you can count on that. Believe it or not, state runner-ups two years in a row is not good enough for those guys. And don't believe the company line either, "were just happy to compete". The Emerald City is only HAPPY when they win. They wouldn't have it any other way. Me either for that matter.
Who's ready for Rockford???

The Midwest Classic
1/10/06
Chicago Heights is beautiful this time of year...
The Tinley Park Bulldogs hit another home run this year with the Midwest Classic. I really like the Marian Catholic High School facility. Did anybody else check out their new wrestling room? Top notch for sure. Updated brackets were awesome. A Pepsi and two pieces of pizza for $5??? I almost tipped the hard working gals behind the counter. Tinley has this tournament down to a science. And the competition...above the IKWF State level in most all brackets.
There's red, then there's Twister Red...
It's was a very distinctive red all over those mats Sunday. They were the team champions by a large margin if I remember right. They are going to be a force at the Novice State tournament and in two years look out in the Seniors. The little Twisters carried the majority of the load with two in the finals at 55(Oliver/Moody), a champ at 58(Moody), 2nd. at 62(Johnson), 3rd. At 66(Powell), 4th at 70(Jackson) and couple doing damage in the wrestle backs. At 101 they made the finals again with Malik Taylor. Another finalist at 122(Roach), and a champion at 215(Williams). They were team dominant. Someone posted "they are back", but I don't buy that. They tied for third last year in the Novice division with 11 year olds. They never LEFT to be back.
C.I.A...on a mission
Ohh boy the Indiana kids came to play. The Central Indiana wrestling Academy kids were a very good group of wrestlers. Their presents was felt first at 79 with a 4th(Beck). He came all the way back after a prelim bout loss to Jauch(CLW). They doubled at 89(Milton-3rd/Nelson-4th). Nelson was the IKWF Senior state runner-up at 79. They had champion at 108(McMurry). I heard a lot of positive comments about them throughout the tournament. I glad they came. I thought the Indiana kids were tough. You have to remember, there were some Indiana kids that wrestled for Illinois clubs. Those kids did well too.
That head gear better be on tight...
Was the competition the best ever? I don't know. One of the old timers could answer that. I had this discussion with a few of the guys over the course of the tournament. The best way I could describe the level of competition this year is like this...take 95% of Illinois' top talent, add 100 tough kids from Indiana, add 50 tough kids from Wisconsin, sprinkle in a few national caliber kids from Iowa, a stud or two from Ohio and you have the Midwest Classic. And ohh yeah, no age divisions with scratch weight classes which forces your best 5th,6th,7th and 8th graders together. I really wish the IKWF age divisions were "grade based" but, that's a topic for another time. Better then state competition, not on the same level as Tulsa by no means but as tough as a "folkstyle regional" if you will. I think you could say Northern Plains-type caliber without the freestyle/greco. Nice size brackets too
Match of the day goes too...
Are you kidding me? Who could pick just one? Rasche/Uccardi(both MFVE) 95 finals. Milton(CIA)/Spangler(FV) 89 semis, Brill(FV)/Klimara(LC) 74 final, Akui(Glad)/Parker(RedH) 147 semis, Munster(FV)/Parras(HT) 115 semis, Taylor(HT)/OBoyle(TPB) 101 quarters, Akers(Min)/Powell(Glad) 95 round one bout, Tsirtis(LC)/Sally(HT) round one bout, Thielke(WI)/Nelson(CIA) 89 semis, Wilbourn(SOT)/Malouf(CLW) 84 semis, there were just to many to mention. There was some great bouts there.
And then it was over...
Seeing coach Fessler(TPB) getting his award form his club was nice. 25 years(?) is a long time in this biz. Our club finished 4th, and my little guy went home with a bracket board his eight grade year. I was the proud dad for sure. As great as that was, it was pointed out to me how neat it was to see these kids near his age and weight all get along so well. Talking between matches, Little Celtics hanging with Martinez kids, Martinez kids hanging with SOT kids, Bulldogs hanging with Catz. That's always nice too see, and really put things into perspective. After all, it is only wrestling

January in the IKWF...
1/1/06
The folkstyle season is in full gear here in Illinois. We have a very busy and competitive month ahead of us. Next week, January 8th, the Midwest Classic will be wrestled at Marion Catholic H.S. in Chicago Heights. This tournament gets most of the top talent from all parts of the state. This "elite" style tournament is well worth the trip. The Tinley Park Bulldogs run this tournament as good as it can be ran. This year the team title should be a tight one. Last years Dual Team State Champs(Martinez Fox Valley Elite), Senior division State Champs(Fox Valley) and the Novice division State Champs(Little Celtics) will all be attending. Weight classes I think you should keep an eye on are 74, 79, 84, 95, and 101. All should be loaded with some of Illinois best and some outstanding out of state kids. “The Classic” is truly classic.
After the Midwest, almost every club in the IKWF will be represented at the 25th Annual IKWF Kids Open in Peoria, Illinois, January 15th. This is a great tournament in the IKWF. The huge venue, the no coaching thing, the 20 wrestling circles, kids everywhere, is a wrestling nuts dream. This enormous fund raiser is quite an accomplishment. Hats off to the IKWF board and the hundreds of volunteers for making this event run smoothly.
Not all clubs enter the IKWF Team Dual State series, but for the ones that do, this should be the weekend, January 22/23, that they qualify for Dual Team State. This is when the competitive juices start flowing with the “mega” clubs in the IKWF. Local rivalries are renewed and team comradery is built instantaneously. These dual meets are great to be a part of. In divisionals, with three teams or less, they will be battling for position in the state bracket. In other divsionals, clubs will be battling just to make it to the state tournament. This is a very exciting weekend for these clubs.
At the end of the month is the IKWF Dual Team State Championships. Twelve teams from across the state will dual for the title of “IKWF Dual Team State Champions”. Martinez Fox Valley Elite has ruled this event over the last four years with four consecutive state championships. Can they make it number five or will they be denied? Can the Sons of Thunder win it all and rain on everyone’s parade? Will the Lil’ Celtics make every one green with envy this year? Could the Vittum Catz claw their way into the finals? Will the Orland Park Pioneers blaze their way through the field of twelve? Can Granite City rock our worlds and claim the title? All these questions will be answered January 29, 2006 at Bloom Trail H.S. Chicago Hts, IL.
