Illinois sent a small but very effective group of wrestlers to this years USA Wrestling Greco-Roman and Freestyle National Championships held in Greenbay Wisconsin. Team Illinois sent 28 wrestlers for the Greco tournament. Although a small number, their results were not. Illinois had 20 wrestlers place in the top 8 earning All American status. Illinois had 2 National Champions, Novice 100lb grappler Michael Johnson Jr. and Mason Wright at Novice 140lb+. At the Freestyle National Illinois did very well again. Team Illinois sent 31 wrestlers with 22 becoming All Americans. The lone Freestyle National Champ was Sam Brooks at Novice 105lbs.

Team Illinois goes MAD in Madison at USAW Northern Plains
6/22/06

Congratulations to all the Illinois wrestlers that competed in this years USAW Northern Plains Cadets/Kids Regional Championship in Madison, WI. States that also participated were Wisconsin(the host state), Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. Team Illinois finished the Greco tournament with a total of 33 medals and 8 champions. Team Illinois ranked third in total medals behind Wisconsin(43) and Minnesota(17). Team Illinois did finish with more champions(8) then Minnesota(7) but well behind Wisconsin(20). In the freestyle tournament Team Illinois proved this is more our states style. Illinois left the Cheese-head state with 50 total freestyle medals and 13 champions. That ranked second in both categories to Wisconsin’s 85 total and 16 champions. Team Illinois had six wrestlers earn double championships this year by winning both styles. Those wrestlers were, Bryce Brill(Novice-75), Sam Brooks(Novice-105), Joey Brewster(SB-95), Antonio Juarez(SB-105), Alex Cizek(SB-120), Jahwon Akui(SB-145).

2005 USAW Schoolboy/girl Freestyle/Greco National Duals
6/16/05 Indianapolis, IN


Congratulations to Team Illinois for their 7th place finish at the USA Wrestling Schoolboy/girl Greco National Duals. Team Illinois finished the Greco tournament with a 5-4 record. Team Illinois recorded victories over Kansas(39-39), Georgia(56-14), Virginia(63-7), and Oklahoma(55-14) on day one of the “A” pool competition. When day two started Illinois had to faced the defending National Champs, PA Rooster Boosters, to complete the pool dual competition. Illinois lost by a large margin(55-20) to PA’s number one team but, the four victories the previous day was good enough for a second place finish in the pool and a birth into the championship blue pool competition.
In round one of championship pool, Illinois suffered losses to Minnesota(56-20), Wisconsin(63-14) and Washington(43-34). In the 7th place dual Team Illinois bounced back with a win over Michigan Blue(38-22). Team Illinois also had two members on the 2005 ASICS Shoolboy/girl All Greco-Roman Dual Team. The two wrestlers are Damonte Riley 80lbs and Ellis Coleman 100lbs.

In the Freestyle portion Team Illinois was 3-3 for the tournament and did not place. Team Illinois did however record victories over Michigan Gold, Indiana Blue and Nebraska in pool competition. Illinois loss to PA Rooster Booster and was eliminated from the championship pool by Team Kansas in the final dual. In the consolation bracket Team Illinois was beaten 40-38 by PA Donkey Kicks.

Team Illinois at the USAW Northen Plains...just plain tough.

6/9/05 Rochchester, MN


Congratulations to all the kids that participated in the Northern Plains Regional this past weekend in Rochester, MN. Illinois sent over 140 kids this year. Compare that to the 100 kids that participated in Rockford, Il for last years tournament and you can tell Freestyle and Greco is really on the rise in the “Land of Lincoln”. In the Midget division Illinois crowned 4 freestyle champions and 1 Greco champion. In the Novice division Illinois was shut out for a freestyle champion and only had 1 champion in the Greco tournament. In the Schoolboy division Illinois fared well again in the freestyle tournament with 4 champions and in the Greco we had 1 lone champion. Illinois had two young men claim double championship; they are Bryce Brill(Midget-70) and Sterling Hecox(Schoolboy-165).
